Old Man - An original watercolour portrait by Sheila Noon

Oil Portraits

Working in oils forces me to challenge my artistic capabilities, as the technique of oil portraits painting is more difficult to capture human expression due the nature of the medium. However I gain a great deal of satisfaction from watching form slowly take shape on the canvas and even from the texture of the paint.

The freedom that oils offer can both hinder and aid an artist to portray both light and also to capture the likeness of the individual. There is a balance between achieving a result which is almost photographic and one which has soul. Oils gives me the chance to find the perfect midpoint.
